Exam #3 will cover the following works and all discussions, lectures, questions, and journal entries (see list below terms). Also be prepared to discuss the works using literary terms:
1.Explain the title. In what way is it suitable to the story?
2.What type of diction does the author use? Is there a specific dialect used?
3.How would you describe the author’s style?
4.Who is the single main character on which the story centers—the protagonist? Is this character dynamic or static?
5.Who are the antagonist(s) in the story and how do they work against the protagonist?
6.What sort of conflict confronts the leading character or characters? external? internal?
7.Is the ending determinate, meaning the major conflict has been addressed and resolved, or is it indeterminate, meaning the major conflict has not been resolved? If the conflict is not resolved, how do you feel as a reader when you finish the work?
8. How does the author handle characterization?

13. Name one major personality trait of each leading character, and tell how the author makes the reader conscious of this trait.
14. Which characters are well-developed (round)? Which are one-dimensional (flat)?
15. Who is the narrator of the story? How does this affect the story?
16. Where does the primary action take place? How is this physical setting important?
17. What is the time setting for the action? Period of history? Season? Time of day?
18. How much time does the story cover? a few minutes? a lifetime? how long?
19. How does the story get started? What is the initial incident? Does it begin in medias res?
20. Briefly describe the rising action of the story.
21. What is the high point, turning point, or climax of the story?
22. Discuss the falling action or close of the story.
23. Is this story realistic or true to life? Explain your answers by giving examples.
24. Are the events or incidents of the plot presented in flashback or in chronological order?
25. Was the selection written as a short story or is it a condensation or excerpt? Is it taken from a collection of stories?
26. What is the general theme of the story? What is the underlying theme? Can you name any other stories with a similar theme?
27. Does this story contain any of the following elements?
30. surprise ending ?
32. Was there a villain in the story? a foil?
33. Can you find any examples of figurative language?
37. Do any of the characters reach an epiphany? If so, what is it?
38. Look for telling quotations that support the theme or help answer any of the above questions. Note any passage that is particularly revealing and explain its significance.
